Risk management of agrochemicals through novel technologies for food safety in Asia

The advent of organic farming has led to the increase use of biofertilizers and biopesticdes to reduce or eliminate the practice of applying chemical fertilizers and pesticides to fruit and vegetables farms. Results of experiments show that both biofertilizers and biopesticides can serve as effective and safe alternative to chemical ones. They are cheap, easy-to-use, safe and most of them do not require repeated application. But the challenge is the area-wide use of these biofertilizers and biopesticides especially for industrial purposes. To do this requires village-level mass production and utilization as well as aggressive marketing campaigns.

The workshop was a gathering of entomologists and pesticide experts from different countries who shared their knowledge on the latest technologies on risk management through novel technologies. They also shared their experiences on the assessment and monitoring of agrochemical utilization and organic farming in their respective countries. During the discussion proper, the group discussed and deliberated  on the issues related to Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and the Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs), and came up with recommendations which they would like to submit to policymakers.

Highlights and recommendations:

  • Design training and education or knowledge programs for all related parties involved in the implementation of GAPs. This includes farmers, producers and consumers;
  • Limit pesticide labeling for Pre-harvest Interval (PHI), which is available only for a major crop;
  • Expand knowledge of local authorities of the various departments and ministries of agriculture through information dissemination and training on usage of effective microorganisms and organic practices to slowly build farmers’ trust;
  • Introduce a combination of organic chemicals with natural compounds for pest control;
  • Use appropriate sampling procedure to avoid set-up samples for residue testing;
  • Establish monitoring system for effective IPM; and
  • Construct or establish databases for pesticides and MRLs in different countries.

FFTC Deputy Director Dr. Takashi Nagai presents a token of appreciation to Dr. Siree Chaiseri, Associate Professor, Food Science Department, Kasetsart University, Thailand during the opening ceremony of the workshop on “Risk management of agrochemicals through novel technologies for food safety in Asia.” Dr. Chaiseri is also a member of FFTC’s Technical Advisory Committee (TAC).

Fifteen speakers from nine countries comprise the participants of the international workshop on “Risk management of agrochemicals through novel technologies for food safety in Asia.” This was held at the Sampran Riverside, Nakhom Pathom, Thailand.  In photo is FFTC-TAC member Dr. Siree Chaiseri (8th from L), Associate Professor, Department of Food Science and Technology, Kasetsart University. Beside her is Dr. Takashi Nagai, FFTC Deputy Director.

Dr. Yigen Liaw, Director of Wei Chuan Food Company, and Senior Technical Advisor of Taiwan Quality Food Association is the keynote speaker in the Thailand workshop. He delivers a paper on “The Techno Rice: An Industrial Application of Supercritical Fluid Technology in Taiwan.” 

Japanese scientist Dr. Nakao Nomura of the University of Tsukuba, delivers a paper on “Application of Ultrasound Technology for Agricultural Product Improvement and Environmental Renovation” According to Dr. Nomura, ultrasound radiation has been applied for analytical observation of lake sediment as well as improvement of aquaculture and agricultural products.

Dr. Cristina Bajet, Filipino scientist and University researcher from the National Crop Protection Center, U.P. Los Baños talks about the colorimetric Rapid Test Kit (RTK), a technology developed at the Pesticide Toxicology and Chemistry Laboratory, NCPC for organophosphate and carbamate residues.

Dr. Warapa Mahakarnchanakul, Assistant Professor at the  Department of Food Science Technology, Kasetsart University presents a novel technology called “Fine Bubbles,”a technology that has been proven successful in waste water treatment.  Their applications were found to reduce microorganisms and pesticides.

Mr. Arus Narawach, Director of the Sampran Organic Farm in Nakhon Pathon, Thailand talks about the success story of their family’s organic farm which is also a famous tourist attraction in Thailand.
