Establishment of database for tropical fruit sector development in Southeast Asia (Year 2)

Issues related to the advancement of the international marketing potential of tropical fruits were the basis for the formulation of rationale and objectives of the project. It was agreed that all initiatives of R&D programs must be evidence or analysis-based, including forward looking analysis about likely trends and future changes.

For the first year, two fruit experts in Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam; and one fruit expert in Korea, Japan and Taiwan were invited to partake in the survey of the tropical fruit sector. The survey included the socio-economic and agri-environmental factors; production, marketing and consumption, constraints, and R&D capacity. The experts were also invited to present their survey results at the “Workshop on Increasing Production and Market Access for Tropical Fruit in Southeast Asia” held in the Southern Horticultural Research Institute (SOFRI) in Vietnam from 13-17 October 2014. Following the workshop, the FFTC staff and Taiwan fruit experts conducted onsite visits to Indonesia and Myanmar in November, 2014 to further comprehend the ground realities of socioeconomic milieu, agro-ecosystem and R&D system related to tropical fruit production and marketing.

Based on the recommendation from the aforesaid workshop and conclusion from the on-site visits, two major events were carried out in the second year. The "Workshop on Improving Pitaya Production and Marketing" was conducted in Kaohsiung, Taiwan from 7-9 September 2015. The workshop drew more than 90 participants from 10 countries. For the second event, the experts from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam were invited to prepare a report based on a critical, constructive analysis of the published and grey literature on the occurrence, prevention and research situation of diseases and insect pests of major tropical fruit crops so as to chart the direction of collaborative research on the priority fruit crops.
