Dr. Nagai Attends the
108th SRD Annual Meeting
FFTC’s Deputy Director, Dr. Takashi Nagai recently attended the 108th annual meeting of the Society of Reproduction and Development (SRD) last September at Miyazaki University, Miyazaki, Japan. SRD, which was established in 1948 to encourage the study of reproductive biology in wild, domestic, laboratory and companion animals, has contributed in the field of reproduction, breeding and improvement of livestock animals. According to Dr. Nagai, in this SRD meeting, the most advanced and updated technologies and knowledge related to animal reproduction were presented and discussed so it was important for him being a scientist, to be deeply involved with animal reproduction. He was also invited by SRD officials to attend the board of governors meeting and discuss about the future directions of SRD.
Dr. Nagai reported that there were more than 350 participants who attended the said annual meeting. “I presented a poster entitled “Effect of medium additives during liquid storage on developmental competence of in vitro bovine oocytes.” The aim of the study, he said, was to find the effective method to maintain developmental competence of bovine oocytes during liquid storage by using additives. He further added: “It was found that addition of pyruvate or serum to storage medium alone did not affect the developmental competence of stored bovine oocytes. However, supplementation of the medium with both pyruvate and serum had a synergic effect to moderate the reduction of developmental competence of stored bovine oocytes.”
The Japanese Deputy Director also added that in attending the board of governors meeting, he was able to make contact with many governors and discussed about the future of SRD and set up the network of the governors. In the said meeting, he was also able to attend the Journal of Reproduction and Development (JRD) editors’ meeting. JRD is the official journal of SRD.”
In line with FFTC’s future activities for next year, Dr. Nagai said the Center is now planning to hold a workshop on “Mitigation of Greenhouse Gases and Adaptation to Climate Change in Livestock Production Systems” as satellite workshop of the 17th AAAP Animal Science Congress in 2016 (http://www.aaap2016.jp/). In fact he was able to contact researchers involved with studies on effects of heat stress on animal reproduction, and discussed about the program of the workshop.
